When it comes to speed, Toyota is the old guard. In addition to its hot-selling sedans, crossovers and SUVs, Toyota also has a series of classic sports cars that attract car fans again and again. Toyota has always had a good reputation for making cars for everyday use, and it is also deeply rooted in the culture of motorsports and has created one exciting sports car after another in its history of more than 60 years.
Illustrated History: From 2000GT to Supra
Regarded as Japan's first true sports car, the Toyota 2000GT launched in 1967 changed the international market's perception of Japanese cars. Dodson believes: "The 2000GT, with its outstanding design and high performance, proved that Japanese cars can compete with other brands of sports cars."
OctoberBeast: An annual event for GR fans
The OctoberBeast held annually by Toyota is an employee-only event that has a history of 32 years. About 85 fans will display their favorite cars, including GR Supra and GR86, so that everyone can appreciate each other and exchange car stories.
Toyota sports car resurgence: not just the glorious era of the 90s
Although the 90s are regarded as the golden age of Toyota sports cars, Toyota sports cars are once again reaching a new peak today. Toyota continues to promote the development of the sports car market, bringing the dual enjoyment of performance and affordability, winning the favor of many fans.
"It's exciting to see Toyota's sports cars incorporate racing DNA into their designs while offering affordable options to fans," said Andrew Dodson, GR Styling Designer at Toyota Motor North America (TMNA).
"The manual transmission remains my favorite design and it's a treasure to have it around," added Steve Marston, Senior Strategist at TMNA.
The Toyota Supra is the best of Toyota's sports cars, especially the fourth-generation A80 from the 1990s, which was known for its iconic design, powerful 2JZ-GTE engine and modding potential. "The Supra has always had a strong following among fans and has become a symbol of Toyota's engineering prowess," said Dodson.
In addition to the 2000GT, the current TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (GR) series of sports cars also consolidates Toyota's position in the sports car field. Toyota continues to launch innovative sports cars to continue this legend.
Carlos Treviño, Marketing and Communications Manager of the GR Series at TMNA, said: "The fun of OctoberBeast is that everyone can really share their passion for cars. Some people like to modify their cars on weekends, and this is a good opportunity to show their hard work."
Sports car trend changes: the integration of technology and lifestyle
With the changing times, the consumer group of Toyota sports cars has expanded to a wider range of technology fans and consumers who pursue quality of life. Dodson said: "This shift reflects the overall trend in the automotive industry, where technology, sustainability and experiential ownership now play a more important role in consumer decision-making. However, Toyota sports cars have always insisted on one thing: driving fun."
Marston points out that despite changing market trends, the Supra remains a classic in the sports car world. "You don't need to buy an expensive supercar brand to own a sports car with ultimate performance."
Motorsport success: Toyota shines in competitions around the world
Another of Toyota's great achievements in the sports car world is its excellence in motorsport. Dodson said: "We have achieved outstanding results in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), World Rally Championship (WRC), Dakar Rally, GT4 events and drift events. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has almost established its leadership in the global racing community."
Treviño agrees: "The racing DNA is really reflected in Toyota's sports cars, which not only look great, but also drive great."
High performance meets comfort
Whether it's a sedan or an SUV, Toyota puts comfort first, and sports cars are no exception. Marston believes: "In the past, driving a sports car required more compromises, but now you can have a car with powerful performance and suitable for daily commuting. It is really a dream."
The perfect blend of high performance and sustainability
Toyota's current sports car lineup combines traditional and modern performance technologies and actively promotes sustainable development. "Consumers can expect even more innovation and we will continue to invest in delivering exciting models that appeal to both traditional fans and a new generation of drivers," Dodson said.
Toyota's sports cars really win my heart. Whether it is the classic 2000GT or the new generation GR series, they are all full of racing pedigree. Especially Supra, it not only represents the pinnacle of Japanese sports cars, but also has an unshakable position in the modification industry. Although there are many new sports car brands on the market today, Toyota can still maintain its unique charm. I look forward to seeing more new models that integrate racing technology and low-carbon technology in the future, and continue to bring endless driving fun to car fans!
